Is it normal to get your period at age 11?
A part of the menstrual cycle when a woman bleeds from her vagina for a few days is called a period. Every month in the years of puberty, a woman’s body readies itself for pregnancy. The linings of her uterus get thick and an egg grows and is released from one of her ovaries. But if the woman does not get into intercourse and the pregnancy does not occur, the level of estrogen and progesterone falls and tells your body to begin menstruation.
On average a woman sheds 2 to 3 tablespoons of blood during periods but the flow’s intensity can sometimes change. Women use pantiliners, pads, tampons, and period underwear to absorb the menstrual and to prevent themselves from stains.
Typically periods occur after every 28 days and the bleeding continues for 4 to 5 days. However, in some girls periods do last longer than 5 days, and still, it is completely normal. Normally a girl gets her period about 2 years after her breasts start growing. The average girl gets her first period when she is almost 12 years old. Some girls do get periods late but it is completely normal.
What happens if you get your period at 11?
Most girls get their first period at the age of 12 or sometimes late but some girls get their first period when they are 11 or younger. But are the early periods harmful, or can they cause disturbance in your body?
Girls who get their first periods when they were 11 or younger are more likely to hit menopause before the age of 40. This state is called premature menopause. Menopause is a stage of women’s life when they stop having periods. Menopause typically occurs at the age of late 40s and marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years. But some women go through menopause before the age of 40 due to illness, surgery (Bilateral Oophorectomy), and other medical treatments. This is called premature menopause.
However, the median age of menopause is 50 years but the girls who get their periods at a younger age are 80 percent more likely to get premature menopause.
Why did I start my period at 11 years?
Normally girls get their first period when they are between 12 to 14 years but the first period at the age of 9 to 16 years is also normal. There are different reasons why girls get their first period early.
- The first reason for girls to get early periods is because the children nowadays are more obese. Obese does not mean that they are overweight but they are above their recommended weight. Fat cells make estrogen and the more fat cells you have, the more estrogen your body will make. Estrogen is a sex hormone so the abundance of estrogen may lead to earlier menstruation.
- The second fact that can become a reason for early first periods is the lack of sleep. Children at the age of 5 to 10 years need at least a 10-hour sleep to stay healthy. When children do not get enough sleep, their body turns off leptin and turns on ghrelin which stimulates the secretion of growth hormones. Growth hormones play a significant role in pubertal development, menstrual cycle, fertility, and reproduction. Hence, the overabundance of growth hormones may lead to periods at an early age.
